Timed Math Facts: Our class takes one timed math test each week. The purpose is to solidify your child's working knowledge of basic addition and subtraction facts. Each test gets progressively more difficult. Your child works at his/her own pace trying to get a better score each time. They begin each test with five minutes to complete 100 problems. After receiving a perfect score, the time is reduced to four minutes. After mastering that test, your child will then progress to the next test.
The various tests will include addition and subtraction facts through 18. Once these have been mastered, students will move to a mixed addition/subtraction test. Some students will move on to learning multiplication facts.
Please support and encourage your child without putting pressure on them. Improving a score by one point is still improvement! My goal is to provide a challenge for each student. I want each student to strive to improve, but most importantly they should do their own personal best. We all excel in different areas.
We are working on understanding addition and subtraction concepts. Each day we work with and explore different strategies for problem solving. Please take time to review the papers with your child. Ask him/her to explain the process and strategy used.
We are trying to build a solid foundation to help your child succeed in mathematics.
You have probably noticed that we have many word problems in our math program. I cannot stress enough the need for your child to be able to read independently. In the classroom, I am able to assist students with reading these problems. However, on formal computer-based assessments I am not able to provide this assistance. Most of the children are able to read these independently. If your child cannot read these to you, please provide added support at home. We are all part of your child's learning team.
Please continue to make learning top priority in your home.
